Sou Fujimoto Interview / Sou Fujimoto Architects / Part 1

06.28.09 / · · · · ·

sou fujimotoInterview to Japanese Architect Sou Fujimoto [1971-] principal of Sou Fujimoto Architects, established in Tokyo in the year 2000. He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1994 and has been a lecturer of Kyoto University since 2007.

His breakthrough to the japanese architecture scene was his project for the competition for Aomori Prefectural Art Museum, won by Jun Aoki and followed in the second place by Fujimoto. In this episode, Toyo Ito was part of the jury and his influence led this architect who came out of nowhere into the final stages of the competition.

His other breakthrough was international: two honorable mentions in 2005’s Architectural Review Awards [for T House and Dormitory for Mentally Disabled, both in Date] and one mention plus one winning entry in the following year [for 7/2 House and Treatment Center for Mentally Disturbed Children, also both in Date]. All of these buildings were commisioned by his own father, who runs a mental treatment facility in Hokkaido, Japan.

In this first part, Fujimoto explains how close is the relationship between architects and specialized media in Japan, specially with Shikenchiku-sha [JA, A+U, Shinkenchiku, etc.], the differences between this model and western ones [like AR] and how worldwide exposure has given him the chance to do some -quoting himself- crazy stuff.

Sou Fujimoto’s work is featured in 2G nº50, out on Jun 30, 2009.
